Landslides in India- its all Human negligence : Dr. Kanungo

Ranchi: Most of the landslides in India occur either due to rain or earthquake or due to human negligence like construction activities, road cutting, mining activities, said Dr. D.P. Kanoongo, Senior Principal Scientist of Geotechnical Engineering Group and Group Leader of Geo-Hazard Disaster Risk Reduction (GHRR) of CSIR – Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee.

Dr. Kanungo shared his thoughts in a webinar session by the Civil Engineering Department of Sarala Birla University (SBU) on ‘Landslide Disaster – Research Science and Engineering’.

Speaking on the occasion he discussed the role of remote sensing and GIS. Wireless sensors in dealing with a single disaster like total stations, drones, UAVs, IoT, Python, machine learning, landslides, made the topic more interesting with some real-life examples includes the landslides of Pakyong Airport, Sikkim and Uttarakhand.

Dr. Kanungo highlighted that an inter-disciplinary and integrated approach is needed to resolve issues of society, social issues.

The eminent speaker was introduced by Prof. Aditi Singh, Assistant in Civil Engineering Department, while the question and answer round was taken by Dr. Pintu Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics. The session was very interactive and informative. In addition to university students and faculties, a large number of students and faculty members from various colleges and universities actively participated in the webinar.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Motoshi Saha, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department.
