IIT (ISM) boosts rural kids’ interest in math and science

RNS: A team from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s Department of Management Studies began its continuing awareness effort today at Upgraded High School, Raghunathpur Purbi Tundi Dhanbad by arranging a session to pique the interest of rural children in the importance of Science and Mathematics in life and career.

The team led by Rashmi Singh, Assistant Professor as Principal Investigator of the project of National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science & Technology (DST) in this regard and comprising of others like Associate Professor Niladri Das and Research Scholar, Marghoob Enam which reached at the school during the early morning at around 10 a.m. addressed over 250 participants, including students, faculty members and others.

Professor Singh, in her address, explained to the students the significance of Science and Maths in understanding Technology in Today’s Technology-driven Era.

“Almost everything that we use in today’s time be it mobile, TV, Computer, Refrigerator, Washing machine, dishwashers are technology dependent, so the knowledge about Science is Mathematics helps us to understand the operation and functioning of these equipment’s,” said Singh while addressing the gathering.

“Knowledge of Maths and Science offers the power of reasoning, creativity, abstract or spatial thinking, critical thinking, problem-solving ability and even effective communication skills essential for any role or responsibility in the technical domain,” added Professor Singh.

She also emphasized the need to ask questions about everything we see, feel or live in to understand the system dynamics in the true sense.

Professor Niadri Das, on the other hand, highlighted how knowledge of Maths helps to understand costs, balance a bank account, and subtract balances, which are essential skills in today’s world.

He further said that knowledge of Mathematics allows us to understand basic life skills such as managing budget, forecasting, and telling time and also allows us to understand basic life skills such as managing budget, forecasting, and telling time.

Notably, this is 7th workshop in the series of workshops being organized.
