70 die from cold amidst freezing winter in Afghanistan

RNS: At least seventy people have succumbed to the effects of the cold and died in Afghanistan as the bitter harsh winter has gripped the country.

According to a report by Tolo News, the State Ministry for Disaster Management of Afghanistan stated that the harsh winter has also claimed the lives of nearly 70,000 livestock animals.

Residents have blamed the rise in fatalities on the unusually cold weather and the economic conditions that led to the growth in unemployment and poverty. The severe winters in Afghanistan make it difficult for people to obtain job, which in turn makes it impossible for them to pay for their families.

It has been reported by employees working for the State Ministry of Disaster Management that they had delivered food and non-food help packages to at least 5,000 households across the nation in the preceding month.
