RNS: Adani Power has begun supplying electricity from its Godda-based plant in Jharkhand to Bangladesh. After a trial run of 14 days, Bangladesh starts receiving 70 megawatts of electricity from Godda Power Plant after the transmission launch on Thursday evening.

The power supply was started through a dedicated transmission line of 105 kms from India to Bangladesh, informed Roy Pal, a spokesperson for the company.

“Godda Power Project started sending 70 megawatts to Bangladesh after transmission on Thursday evening. Supply will rise steadily in line with demand,” said an official of the Bangladesh Power Authority.

With a cost of around Rs 16,000 crore, the Adani power plant (1600 MW)—with two units of 800 MW each, including water pipelines and power evacuation systems, established at Motia village, about 12 km from Godda town, in Jharkhand.

Adani Power and the Bangladesh Power Development Board signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in 2015, following a joint declaration issued during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka that year. As per the MoU, the entire production from the project can be supplied to Bangladesh.

The erection work of the power plant began in 2018 after the acquisition of the land, which was intended to be completed by 2021, but due to the COVID pandemic, the project got delayed; completed in December 2022.

Adani Power is a step towards consolidating India’s growing regional presence. The plant was constructed with ultra-supercritical technology— Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP)—to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other fine particles that are harmful to health. This plant is also equipped with Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) to control emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfur trioxide (SO3) from plants burning coal with high sulfur contents, official sources informed.

According to the reports, Bangladesh has been importing power from India for supply without disruption since 2013. Now Bangladesh receives 1,000 MW of electricity from Bahrampur in West Bengal via Kushtia’s Bherama and 160 MW from Suryamoni in Tripura via Cumilla daily besides Jharkhand.
