Heavy rain disrupts normal life in North India

RNS: Northern India has been experiencing intense rainfall, causing widespread disruption to normal life across the region. The relentless downpour over the last few days has led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas, causing traffic snarls and leaving residents in a lurch.

In many places, the heavy showers have surpassed the expected rainfall for this time of the year, leading to a state of emergency.

The torrential rain in Uttar Pradesh has killed at least 34 people in the past 24 hours. The state relief commissioner’s office reported five drownings in Raebareli and four in Bareilly. Lightening and severe rain killed people at Muzaffarnagar, Kaushambi Etah, Kannauj, Badayun, Ghazipur, Jalaun, and Kanpur.

The meteorological agency issued an Orange alert for various districts due to heavy rain today. Some schools and institutions were closed due to heavy rain warnings. The Lucknow administration has also recommended residents to stay indoors unless essential. One NDRF unit has moved to Bareilly, and four teams in Ghaziabad are on high alert for natural disasters. Many districts have public rain emergency helplines.

Meanwhile, flash floods and landslides in Himachal Pradesh killed six more people on Sunday, cutting out electricity and water and forcing the government to close all educational institutions for two days.

Over 60 rain-related incidents across the state killed six, left three missing, and trapped 281 people. Most roads, bridges, and highways flooded.

State officials reported 54 storm-related deaths and 96 injuries.

The state government informed district administrations of safety measures.
