IIT-ISM research scholar’s initiative to educate underprivileged children

RNS: The laudable efforts of a dedicated group of research scholars from the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad (IIT-ISM) to provide quality education to underprivileged children through their initiative known as Karma Jyoti, a functional group operating under the Centre of Societal Mission (CSM), are gaining widespread recognition.

Sanjeev Anand Sahu, who serves as the Associate Dean for Rajbhasa Karyanwayan at IIT (ISM) and also leads the Centre of Societal Mission, was recently honored for his significant contributions to this initiative.

The recognition came during a seminar titled “Study of the Educational Status of Tribal Women in Jharkhand in the Present Scenario,” organized by the Koylanchal Charitable Foundation in Hirapur, Dhanbad, on September 24.

The seminar served as a platform for educationists and experts from across the country to convene and deliberate on critical issues related to the educational prospects of tribal women, emphasizing their holistic development and empowerment.

Among the topics discussed were the challenges faced by tribal communities in accessing quality education and potential solutions to bridge this gap.

Speaking on the occasion, Sanjeev Anand Sahu shared insights into the goals of the Centre of Societal Mission at IIT (ISM), which was established in 2015 with a fundamental mission to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth in the villages surrounding the institute.

He highlighted the crucial role played by Karma Jyoti, a functional group within CSM, which conducts free coaching sessions to assist academically talented students from underprivileged backgrounds. Additionally, these scholars provide valuable computer training to empower these students with valuable digital skills.

Sahu proudly noted, “A significant number of girl students from tribal communities have availed themselves of the free coaching sessions conducted annually by the dedicated research scholars from our institute.” This initiative not only reflects the commitment of IIT-ISM to uplifting the neighboring communities but also contributes to creating a brighter future for these deserving young individuals.

The Karma Jyoti initiative stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and community engagement, embodying the core values of IIT-ISM in making a positive impact on society. Its recognition at forums like the seminar on tribal women’s education status reaffirms the importance of such initiatives in building a more equitable and empowered future for underprivileged children.
