Jharkhand HC orders BSL to pay Rs 10 lakhs compensation for Student’s death in swimming pool

Bokaro: Jharkhand High Court has issued a directive that requires Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL) to provide compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of a student who tragically lost their life in a swimming pool accident on the company’s premises in 2019. This development is significant and highlights the court’s decision to hold BSL accountable for the incident.

The unfortunate incident occurred when a student from a local private school drowned in the BSL swimming pool. Subsequently, the family members of the young victim raised concerns about the inadequate safety measures in place, alleging that the required swimming pool standards were not maintained and life jackets were not readily available.

BSL’s management had initially denied any wrongdoing in the matter. However, the family of the deceased had filed a criminal First Information Report (FIR) in Bokaro, followed by a criminal writ petition in the High Court. The initial single-bench ruling did not rule in their favour.

Later, Arvind Kumar Sinha, the father of the deceased, pursued a fresh appeal in the High Court, challenging the single bench’s decision. The case was heard before a bench comprising High Court judges Justice S Chandrashekhar and Justice Anubha Rawat Chaudhary.

Ultimately, the bench delivered the verdict, mandating BSL to provide a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the grieving family, bringing a measure of closure to this tragic incident.
