Delhi Congress Chief Resigns Over AAP Alliance Dispute, Alleged Party Interference

New Delhi: Arvinder Singh Lovely, the Delhi Congress leader, resigned from his position as the chief of the party’s Delhi unit, citing disagreements over the alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Lovely expressed concern over the alliance with AAP, highlighting that several AAP ministers have faced corruption charges and were even jailed. Despite opposition from party workers, the Congress decided to form an alliance with AAP for the Lok Sabha elections.

In a letter addressed to Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Lovely stated that he could not protect the interests of Delhi Congress workers under such circumstances, leading to his decision to step down.

“The Delhi Congress Unit was against an alliance with a party (AAP) which was formed on the sole basis of leveling false, fabricated, and malicious corruption charges against the Congress. Despite that, the party made a decision to ally with the AAP in Delhi,” he mentioned.

Lovely also hinted at an internal rift, alleging that several decisions he made as the Delhi Congress Chief were overruled by the AICC General Secretary (Delhi In-charge).

“Since my appointment as DPCC President, the AICC General Secretary (Delhi In-charge) has not allowed me to make any senior appointments in the DPCC,” he added.

He further criticized the party for giving Lok Sabha tickets to candidates who were “total strangers” to the Delhi Congress unit, referring specifically to Udit Raj’s candidature in North-west Delhi and Kanhaiya Kumar in Northeast Delhi.

Arvinder Singh Lovely was appointed as the Delhi Congress President in August last year.

Notably, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress had agreed to a 4:3 seat-sharing formula for Delhi to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections together in earlier this year.
