Bokaro Steel Plant bags Kalinga Environmental Excellence Award

Bokaro: SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant has been honored with the prestigious Kalinga Environmental Excellence Award for its outstanding achievements in the “Environmental Excellence” category at the start of the financial year 2024-25.

Nitesh Ranjan, Assistant General Manager (Environment), presented Bokaro Steel Plant’s initiatives to the jury from the ECS (Environment Protection & Sustainability) Department of Public Enterprises, Hyderabad, and the State Pollution Control Board, Odisha.

N P Srivastava, General Manager (Environment), addressed all queries from the jury, who were highly impressed by the plant’s dynamic environmental protection efforts and sustainable steel manufacturing practices.

The award ceremony, organized by the Institute of Quality, is scheduled for June 8, 2024, in Bhubaneswar. This recognition underscores Bokaro Steel Plant’s commitment to environmental sustainability under the leadership of Birendra Kumar Tiwari, Director-in-Charge.

The plant has emphasized operational excellence and sustainability through circular economy practices, energy efficiency, and environmental protection.

Noteworthy achievements include a 12.07% reduction in particulate matter emissions and a 77.3% reduction in specific effluent discharge over the past three financial years. The plant also achieved 100% solid waste utilization during FY 2022-23 and 2023-24.

BSL has planted over 4.7 million saplings since its inception and is taking significant steps toward India’s renewable energy goals for 2030, as committed at COP26. Initiatives include identifying cooling ponds for floating solar power plants and implementing operational excellence and energy efficiency measures to achieve net neutrality by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
