BSL bags Greentech International EHS Award 2024

Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a unit of Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has been honored with the prestigious Greentech International Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Award 2024 in the “Environment Leadership” category.

This recognition underscores Bokaro Steel Plant’s commitment to responsible practices, innovation, and new initiatives aimed at achieving sustainability goals.

The award was presented to BSL by its General Manager (Environment), NP Shrivastava, and Assistant General Manager (Environment), Nitesh Ranjan, before the jury members on May 27, 2024.

The jury was highly impressed by BSL’s dynamic initiatives, particularly in producing eco-friendly green steel and creating eco-friendly products from waste materials generated during steelmaking.

The plant’s efforts in eco-friendly steel production through decarbonization, waste elimination, and value creation via circular economy concepts, as well as its safety initiatives under Project “KAVACH” by SAIL/BSL, were lauded by the jury.

Noteworthy achievements include a 29.33% reduction in particulate matter and an 85.09% reduction in specific effluent discharge over the last three years, demonstrating BSL’s commitment to eco-friendliness.

The plant has also taken innovative steps in producing eco-friendly products such as Rail Ballast, Fly-Ash LD Slag Brick, and Paver Blocks from Slag, as well as developing eco-friendly Soil Conditioners from waste products. Additionally, a Bio-Digester Plant has been installed to convert canteen waste into Bio-Gas and Manure.

In line with India’s commitment to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, Bokaro Steel Plant has developed a highly alloyed, corrosion-resistant SAILCOR grade, which exhibits excellent corrosion resistance—four times better than conventional materials—for manufacturing solar panels.

Furthermore, Bokaro Steel has obtained a license for weather-resistant steel IS 11587, an indigenous equivalent grade to Corten Steel, in support of the Make in India campaign.

BSL is set to receive the Global EHS Award 2024 on June 28, 2024, in Bangkok, in the presence of the Labour Minister of Thailand.

This accolade further solidifies BSL’s position as a leader in environmental sustainability and innovation in the steel industry.
