New Delhi: The Modi Government 3.0 has officially designated 25th June as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ in remembrance of the imposition of Emergency by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on that date in 1975. The Emergency era saw severe curtailment of civil liberties, including press freedom, across India.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced this decision, stating, “On 25th June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi strangled the soul of Indian democracy by imposing Emergency in the country, showcasing her dictatorial mentality. Lakhs of people were unjustly imprisoned, and the voice of the media was stifled.” He emphasized that the Government of India aims to observe this day annually to honor the courage of those who endured the hardships of the Emergency.
In his statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked, “This day will serve as a reminder to all citizens about the events that unfolded on 25th June. It will remind us how the Constitution was undermined on that fateful day.”
The decision has stirred discussions across political circles and among citizens, highlighting the significance of preserving democratic principles and fundamental rights.
