New Delhi: In a significant step towards fostering international collaboration in academia, the University of Leeds (UoL) and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IITKGP) have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This landmark agreement, signed amidst the University of Leeds’ 25-Year Celebrations in Delhi on June 28, 2024, aims to enhance research capabilities in Civil Engineering, Transport Studies, and Biological Sciences through joint PhD programs and collaborative projects.
The MoU underscores the growing importance of India in the global academic landscape and solidifies a long-term partnership between the two prestigious institutions.
A delegation from IIT Kharagpur participated in the celebration, marking the occasion with the signing of a Joint External Supervision Agreement, symbolizing the enduring relationship between the University of Leeds and IIT Kharagpur.
Speaking on the collaboration, Professor Manuel Barcia, Dean of Global Engagement at the University of Leeds, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to embark on this collaborative journey with IIT Kharagpur.
This MoU not only strengthens our international ties but also underscores our commitment to fostering global academic excellence. By integrating our research capabilities and academic expertise, we aim to innovate solutions to global challenges in fields such as Clean Energy, Sustainable Transport, and Healthcare.”
Professor Rabibrata Mukherjee, Dean of International Relations at IIT Kharagpur, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potential for joint research projects, student and faculty exchanges, and co-supervision of doctoral theses.
“This partnership opens new avenues for academic exchange and collaborative research. Our joint efforts will focus on addressing key Sustainable Development Goals, including Resilient Infrastructure and Water and Sanitation,” remarked Professor Mukherjee.
The collaboration also anticipates future initiatives such as a Jointly Funded Bilateral Mobility Agreement and participation in the Leeds International Partners Conference scheduled for December 2024. These endeavors aim to further strengthen the partnership and enhance mutual learning and knowledge exchange.
The partnership between the University of Leeds and IIT Kharagpur is poised to make significant strides in higher education and research, leveraging their respective strengths to drive innovation and make impactful contributions to society.
