Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced today that the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus will take the oath of office tomorrow evening. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8 PM.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman explained that while there had been discussions about holding the oath-taking ceremony in the afternoon, it was deemed impractical due to the tight schedule. Yunus is expected to arrive in Dhaka around 2:10 PM, making an evening ceremony more feasible. The event will accommodate approximately 400 attendees.
In a statement, Yunus urged calm and collaboration as he prepares to lead the interim government. Describing the current moment as a “Second Victory Day,” Yunus praised the students and citizens who contributed to the transition. “Let us make the best use of our new victory,” Yunus said. “I fervently appeal to everybody to stay calm and avoid violence. This is a beautiful country with exciting possibilities, and we must work together to build a better future.”
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, leader of the BNP and a long-time rival of Sheikh Hasina, has called for unity and patience. Following her release from prison a day after Hasina’s resignation and flight to India amid violent protests, Zia urged protesters to set aside thoughts of revenge and focus on rebuilding the nation. “Let us set aside our differences and work together to make Bangladesh a wonderful country for future generations,” Zia stated through her party’s secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
The protests, which led to the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resulted in over 100 fatalities and significant unrest. As the country transitions to Yunus’s leadership, both Yunus and Zia emphasize the importance of calm and constructive efforts in moving forward.
