US backs India’s permanent membership in UN Security Council

New Delhi: U.S. President Joe Biden has expressed strong support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed United Nations Security Council. This endorsement came during a recent discussion with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was praised for his historic visit to Ukraine and his message of peace amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

In a statement, Biden highlighted the significant trust and collaboration that has developed between the United States and India. Both leaders agreed that the U.S.-India partnership should focus on upholding democracy, freedom, the rule of law, human rights, pluralism, and equal opportunities as they work towards a shared vision for their nations.

Biden commended Modi for his leadership on the global stage, particularly during India’s G-20 presidency and in the Global South. He also acknowledged Modi’s efforts to strengthen the Quad partnership to promote a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

The U.S. President recognized India’s role in addressing pressing global challenges, from supporting the worldwide response to the COVID-19 pandemic to tackling the repercussions of various international conflicts. He specifically lauded Modi for his landmark visits to Poland and Ukraine, marking the first such trips by an Indian Prime Minister in decades, and for India’s ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine, including aid to its energy sector.

Additionally, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding maritime routes, with India set to co-lead the Combined Task Force 150 in 2025 to secure the Arabian Sea.

Biden and Modi emphasized the necessity of a closer U.S.-India partnership for a cleaner, more inclusive, and secure global future.
