RNS: Legendary actor Mithun Chakraborty will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony next month. The announcement was made by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who praised Chakraborty’s inspiring journey from the streets of Kolkata to cinematic stardom.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is the highest honour in Indian cinema, and Chakraborty will receive it for the year 2022. Minister Vaishnaw shared the news on social media platform X, stating, “Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.”
The ceremony is scheduled for October 8, where Chakraborty will be celebrated for his impressive body of work. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his delight over the award, highlighting Chakraborty’s status as a cultural icon admired across generations. He congratulated the actor on X, acknowledging his unparalleled contributions to the industry.
Chakraborty’s cinematic journey began with his debut in the 1976 film Mrigayaa, directed by esteemed filmmaker Mrinal Sen. His portrayal of a Santhal rebel earned him acclaim, setting the stage for a remarkable career. The actor gained widespread fame in the 1980s with his role in the blockbuster Disco Dancer (1982), a film that solidified his status as a dancing sensation and popularized disco music in India.
His versatility shone through in various roles, including a memorable performance in Agneepath, which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1990. Chakraborty has won three National Film Awards for Best Actor, showcasing his talent across multiple genres.
