Ranchi: The National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL) Ranchi hosted a panel discussion titled “Echoes of Injustice against Women: Unveiling Dark Testimony of Witch Hunts in Rural Jharkhand,” organized by its Centre for Panchayati Raj and Women’s Empowerment.
Padma Shri Chhutni Mahto was the chief speaker, joined by independent researcher Akriti Lakra, St. Xavier’s College lecturer Jenny Toppo, and Child Welfare Association NGO social worker Shivani Priya. Dr. Sangeeta Laha and Dr. Jisu Ketan Patnaik also attended.
The event began with a lamp lighting ceremony and a play performed by children that illustrated the plight of women accused of witchcraft. Dr. Laha highlighted the Panchayati Raj Department’s efforts in addressing these issues and thanked Vice Chancellor Prof. Ashok R. Patil for his support.
Chhutni Mahto shared her personal story of fleeing her village after being labeled a witch, stating, “Today, the same person whom society declared a witch has received the Padma Shri award.”
Akriti Lakra remarked on societal resistance to strong women, while Jenny Toppo presented statistics showing the ongoing prevalence of witch hunts in Jharkhand. Shivani Priya noted the impact on children, sharing a case from Khunti where a boy dropped out of school to care for his attacked mother.
The discussion aimed to raise awareness about women’s rights and the urgent need for empowerment in the face of witch hunting.
