Imphal: Eleven suspected Kuki militants were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces following an attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) post in the Jiribam district of Manipur on Monday, according to media reports.
The militants targeted the CRPF post at Jakuradhor and the Borobekra Police Station, launching a violent assault. During the attack, CRPF constable Sanjeev Kumar sustained a bullet injury and was promptly evacuated to Silchar Medical College in Assam, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
In a separate incident, two elderly individuals were found dead in their home, which had been set on fire by the militants in Jiribam.
The Manipur Police, in a statement on social media platform X, confirmed that the attack was met with a strong retaliation from the CRPF and Civil Police. After a 40-45 minute exchange of heavy gunfire, the situation was brought under control.
“Operations in and around Jakuradhor, under Borobekra Police Station, Jiribam District, continue to flush out armed militants. Reinforcement teams consisting of Assam Rifles, CRPF, and Civil Police have been rushed to the area,” the statement read.
In response to the ongoing violence, the Kuki civil society has called for a bandh (general strike) in the hill areas of Manipur on Tuesday, from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.
This latest attack comes just days after two civilians were killed in the state. Last week, a 31-year-old woman was killed in an attack in Jiribam, while a 34-year-old woman succumbed to bullet injuries in Bishnupur.
The situation in Manipur remains tense, with ongoing security operations aimed at restoring peace and order in the affected regions.
