Dhanbad: Dr. M. Velan, Adjunct Faculty at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM) Kancheepuram, and former Advisor for Environment at NLC India Ltd, delivered a keynote lecture at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
The lecture, titled “Balancing Environmental Protection with Industry Sustainability: A Case Study of Successful Mining Industry,” was part of the Mission LiFE Keynote Lecture Series [2024-25].
Organized by the EIACP Programme Centre (RP) within the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, the session was themed “Integrative Approaches to Sustainable Development: Innovations, Challenges, and Solutions.” Dr. Velan’s hour-long talk focused on addressing the environmental challenges posed by the mining industry and the essential management practices required for ecological balance.
He discussed successful reclamation and restoration strategies in the lignite mining sector, emphasizing the restoration of ecosystems and the implementation of integrated farming systems as part of the circular economy.
His research, which includes Green Product Design, Sustainable Manufacturing, and Carbon Capture Utilization, provided valuable insights into sustainable practices in industrial settings.
The lecture provided attendees with a deeper understanding of the intersection between environmental protection and industrial sustainability, offering practical solutions to the challenges faced by the mining industry.
