Former US President Jimmy Carter Passes Away at 100

Washington: Jimmy Carter, the longest-living U.S. president, passed away on Sunday at 100. The former president, who served from 1977 to 1981, died at his home in Plains, Georgia, as confirmed by The Carter Center. Carter, who celebrated his centenary in October, is remembered for his contributions to public service and global peace.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin honored Carter’s leadership, noting his military service and global security efforts, including the Carter Doctrine and his role in strengthening NATO, addressing the Iranian Revolution, and responding to Soviet actions in Afghanistan. Carter is also lauded for establishing U.S. diplomatic relations with China and brokering the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.

After the death of George H.W. Bush in 2018, Carter became the oldest surviving U.S. president. His legacy, while marked by economic and foreign policy challenges, includes the Iran hostage crisis and his diplomatic accomplishments. President Joe Biden mourned Carter’s passing, praising his friendship and global impact.

Carter’s presidency was followed by a defeat in 1980, and he was succeeded by Ronald Reagan. Before entering politics, he served in the U.S. Navy and revitalized his family’s peanut business. Known for his commitment to civil rights and foreign diplomacy, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his post-presidency humanitarian work. He co-founded The Elders in 2007 to promote peace and ethical leadership.

Carter is survived by his four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
