Dr. Rajagopala, Key Architect of India’s Nuclear Programme, Passes Away at 88

Mumbai: Dr. Rajagopala Chidambaram, a senior scientist and one of the foremost architects of India’s nuclear programme, passed away in the early hours of Saturday at a hospital in Mumbai. He was 88 years old and had been ill for several days before his death.

Dr. Chidambaram was a pivotal figure in India’s nuclear history, contributing significantly to the nation’s scientific and strategic advancements. He played a crucial role in India’s first nuclear test in 1974, which earned the country the title of a nuclear state. His leadership was also instrumental in the Pokhran-II tests of 1998, which further solidified India’s position as a global nuclear power.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Dr. Chidambaram held several prominent positions, including that of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and Chairperson of the Atomic Energy Commission. His work laid the foundation for India’s nuclear energy capabilities and strengthened its defense posture.

Dr. Chidambaram’s contributions were recognized with some of the nation’s highest honours, including the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1999. His passing marks the end of an era in India’s scientific community.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over Dr. Chidambaram’s passing, paying tribute to his outstanding contributions. In a post on social media, Mr. Modi described Dr. Chidambaram as one of the key architects of India’s nuclear programme. He hailed his immense contributions in bolstering India’s scientific and strategic capabilities.

“Dr. Chidambaram’s pioneering work in the field of nuclear science will be remembered with great gratitude by the entire nation. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” the Prime Minister wrote.
