Bokaro: ESL Steel Limited (ESL) has marked a significant achievement at the National Convention on Quality Concepts (NCQC) 2024 held at ABV-IIITM in Gwalior, securing a prestigious Par Excellence Award and two Excellence Awards. Competing against 2,227 teams from 607 companies and over 12,000 delegates, ESL emerged as a leader in quality innovation.
The Par Excellence Award was presented to Team UDAAN from the SMS Refractory division, consisting of Kumar Diwakar, Priyadarshini, and Jitendra Kumar. The team was recognized for their project that achieved SMS’s highest-ever BOF life while setting a record for the lowest specific refractory consumption.
The Excellence Awards were given to two other teams for their exceptional contributions.
Team PRAYAS from SMS, made up of Jaydeb Murmu, Arindam Kotal, and Abhineet Kumar were honoured for significantly reducing nitrogen consumption in the SMS process.
Meanwhile, Team PARIVARTAN from the Bar Mill, featuring Subhendu Banerjee, Shalu Raj, and Richa Shukla, was recognized for reducing hooking and improving mill availability.
The success was the result of meticulous preparation by ESL’s Business Excellence Team, which led the internal selection and preparation process. This process involved rigorous screening, knowledge tests, case study drafting, and presentation refinement to meet NCQC’s high standards.
Teams at NCQC were evaluated across three critical components: Case Study Content, Knowledge Test Scores, and Live Presentation Scores. These evaluations ensured a comprehensive assessment of the teams’ problem-solving abilities, technical expertise, and presentation skills.
The success at NCQC 2024 highlights the leadership of Meenakshi Sabharwal, Chief Quality and Business Excellence Officer, and Vinay Bhushan Kumar, Lead of Business Excellence, whose strategic guidance was key to ESL’s achievements. Special recognition was also given to Shalu Priya, Lead PMO & External Awards, for her role in managing the selection and presentation processes.
Sabharwal expressed her pride in the team’s accomplishments, saying, “This success at NCQC 2024 showcases ESL’s commitment to excellence and innovation. Our teams’ dedication to quality, problem-solving, and collaboration has set new industry standards.”
