Prayagraj: The world’s largest spiritual and cultural gathering, the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, officially commenced on Monday in the holy city of Prayagraj. By 9 am, officials reported that more than six million devotees and pilgrims had already bathed in the sacred waters of the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers meet.
Participants from across the globe have gathered to take part in the holy dip at various ghats of the Sangam, marking the start of a month-long event that will conclude on February 26th, coinciding with Mahashivaratri.
This year’s Maha Kumbh holds extra significance due to a rare celestial alignment, an event that occurs once every 144 years, making the occasion even more auspicious for the millions in attendance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered their warm wishes to the devotees. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi described the event as “a very special day for crores of people who cherish Bharatiya values and culture.” He further noted that the Maha Kumbh represents “a sacred confluence of faith, devotion, and culture,” celebrating India’s spiritual heritage and promoting faith and harmony.
