Dhanbad: IIT-ISM Dhanbad recently hosted the International Conference on Smart, Resilient, and Sustainable Infrastructure (SRISTI), bringing together over 150 civil engineering experts from around the world. The two-day event, organized by the Civil Engineering Department in partnership with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), focused on exploring innovative and sustainable solutions for infrastructure development.
The conference kicked off at the Executive Development Centre, where IIT-ISM Director Professor Sukumar Mishra delivered the keynote address. The event was attended by notable figures, including Professor Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT-ISM, and Dilip Kumar Dhar, Secretary of ASCE’s Eastern Region. The session began with a welcoming speech from Conference Convenor Professor Piyali Sengupta, while Professor Rajib Sarkar concluded with a vote of thanks.
In his keynote, Professor Mishra highlighted the importance of a comprehensive approach to infrastructure, emphasizing the integration of mechanical, social, and energy-efficient design principles in line with Sustainable Development Goals. Professor Dheeraj Kumar stressed the urgent need for zero-waste and zero-discharge practices to ensure the resilience of infrastructure against climate change. Dilip Kumar Dhar also shared ASCE’s rich history of contributions to civil engineering, from its founding in 1852 to its ongoing leadership in technological advancements and professional development.
The conference featured keynote speeches from 28 prominent experts, including Professor Fernando Ortiz Quintana from ETH Zurich, Professor Li Bing from Nanyang Technological University, and Professor Anupam Chakraborty from IIT Roorkee. In addition to these addresses, over 100 research papers were presented on topics ranging from advanced construction techniques and disaster-resistant infrastructure to smart cities, sustainable materials, intelligent transportation systems, and AI applications in civil engineering.
The SRISTI conference served as a platform for global collaboration and knowledge sharing, with the overarching goal of advancing sustainable, resilient infrastructure for the future.
