Renowned Cardiologist Dr. KM Cherian Passes Away at 82

Bengaluru: Dr. KM Cherian, one of India’s most celebrated cardiologists, passed away at the age of 82 after collapsing while attending a wedding in Bengaluru. With a career spanning over five decades, Dr. Cherian was a pioneer in the field of cardiac surgery, credited with performing India’s first heart-lung transplant and establishing himself as a global figure in medicine.

Dr. Cherian’s legacy includes the establishment of the Frontier Lifeline Hospital and Frontier Mediville, a sprawling medical science park in Chennai that became a center of excellence for cardiac care. Known for his compassionate approach, he was particularly lauded for his work with pediatric patients, helping to alleviate the fears of both children and their parents before surgery.

A graduate of Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Manipal, Dr. Cherian honed his skills in cardiac surgery in Australia and New Zealand before returning to India, where he also served as a faculty member at CMC Vellore. His contributions extended beyond medicine; he was honored as an honorary cardiac surgeon to the President of India and played a key diplomatic role in various international situations, including negotiating the release of Indian drivers imprisoned in Iraq.

His experience treating 20 Iraqi children and sharing his expertise with doctors from across the globe was part of his lasting impact on the medical community. Recently, Dr. Cherian launched his biography in Kerala, reflecting on his remarkable career and achievements.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences following Dr. Cherian’s passing, calling him “one of the most distinguished doctors of the country.” The Prime Minister praised Dr. Cherian’s monumental contributions to cardiology and noted his emphasis on technological innovation, which has inspired countless future doctors.

Dr. Cherian’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian cardiology, but his legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations of medical professionals.
