Uttarakhand Becomes First State to Enforce Uniform Civil Code

RNS: Uttarakhand has made history as the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a move that aims to standardize personal civil laws and ensure equal rights for all citizens.

The introduction of the UCC was a key promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the 2022 assembly elections, in which the party secured a second consecutive term in power.

The state cabinet recently approved the rules and regulations for the UCC’s implementation and delegated the authority to the Chief Minister to set a formal date for its enforcement.

The UCC will establish a uniform set of laws governing marriage, divorce, succession, and inheritance for all citizens in the state, regardless of religion, with the exception of scheduled tribes.

Additionally, the law mandates the registration of all marriages and live-in relationships, promoting transparency and equality in personal legal matters.
