Historic Trade Resumption: Pakistan and Bangladesh Reconnect After 54 Years

RNS: In a historic move, Bangladesh and Pakistan have resumed direct trade for the first time since the 1971 Liberation War, which resulted in Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan. This marks a significant shift in bilateral relations between the two nations.

The first government-approved cargo has already departed from Pakistan’s Port Qasim, signaling the beginning of renewed trade ties. According to reports from The Express Tribune, Bangladesh has agreed to purchase 50,000 tonnes of Pakistani rice through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP). The shipment will be delivered in two phases, with the first 25,000 tonnes now on its way to Bangladesh, while the second batch is expected to depart in early March.

This deal is expected to strengthen economic connections between the two countries and establish direct shipping routes. The agreement was finalized earlier this month, and for the first time, a vessel from Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), carrying government cargo, will dock at a Bangladeshi port, a landmark event in maritime trade relations.

The move is seen as a positive step toward improving bilateral ties that have remained dormant for decades. It comes after the installation of an interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina fled to India in August amid violent protests over a job quota issue. Since the change in leadership, the relationship between Bangladesh and Pakistan has gradually improved.

However, the ties between India and Bangladesh have recently been strained, particularly after the formation of the interim government, with anti-India sentiments running high in Bangladesh and attacks on Hindu minorities.

The resumption of trade between Pakistan and Bangladesh is viewed as a key development in fostering stronger economic and diplomatic relations in South Asia.
