*Sunita Williams Begins Return Journey to Earth After 9 Months in Space, PM Modi Sends Heartfelt Message*
RNS: Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams has started her long-awaited return journey to Earth after spending nine months aboard the International Space Station (ISS) alongside her colleague, Butch Wilmore.
The two astronauts had been stranded in space since June of last year due to propulsion issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, which was unable to bring them back to Earth after its maiden crewed mission.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his admiration for Williams in a heartfelt letter, acknowledging her extraordinary achievements and the perseverance she demonstrated throughout her time in space.
In the letter, Modi wrote, “1.4 billion Indians have always taken great pride in your achievements. Recent developments have once again showcased your inspirational fortitude and perseverance.”
Modi emphasized that despite Williams’ distance from home, she remained close to the hearts of the Indian people. “Even though you are thousands of miles away, you continue to remain close to our hearts,” he added. The Prime Minister assured her that people in India were praying for her health and the success of her mission. He also looked forward to welcoming her back to India after her return, stating, “It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its most illustrious daughters.”
The letter was shared on social media by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who wrote: “As the whole world waits, with abated breath, for the safe return of Sunita Williams, this is how PM @narendramodi expressed his concern for this daughter of India.”
Williams and Wilmore departed from the ISS aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft at 10:35 AM IST.
NASA confirmed the undocking of the spacecraft at 1:05 AM ET (0505 UTC) and announced that reentry and splashdown coverage would begin at 4:45 PM ET (2145 UTC). The astronauts are expected to complete their 17-hour journey back to Earth.
