New Delhi: The Indian government has voiced concerns regarding the hospitality extended to fugitive preacher Zakir Naik during his recent visit to Pakistan. Pakistani media reported that Naik met with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz at their residence in Raiwind.
In response to Naik’s visit and the treatment he received, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed concern, emphasizing that this was not the first time Naik had been treated with such support in Pakistan. “This shows the kind of approach his hosts have and what it means in terms of supporting a person who is wanted in India,” Jaiswal said.
The meeting between Naik and Sharif reportedly covered various topics, though no official statement has been issued regarding the specifics of their discussion.
Meanwhile, former Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Hafeez faced online backlash after sharing pictures of his meeting with Naik, referring to it as a “pleasure meeting.” Social media users criticized Hafeez, with many pointing out that Naik is a fugitive wanted by India.
Naik, who faces charges of money laundering and hate speech in India, had also met Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in 2024, where Sharif praised Naik for promoting Islamic teachings globally.
India’s concerns have been heightened by these interactions, particularly given Naik’s controversial status and the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.
