Rajeev Chandrasekhar files nomination for Kerala BJP chief, likely to be elected unopposed

Thiruvananthapuram: Former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar submitted his nomination on Sunday for the position of Kerala BJP president, making him the sole candidate for the role. As the only contender, he is expected to be elected unopposed, according to media reports.

The official announcement is set to be made on Monday at 11 am during a press conference by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, who oversees the party’s organizational elections in Kerala.

Chandrasekhar, 60, filed his nomination after a BJP core committee meeting earlier in the day. His nomination follows the conclusion of K Surendran’s tenure as the Kerala BJP chief. Surendran faced criticism after the party’s loss in the Palakkad assembly by-election in November 2024, where he took responsibility for the defeat.

A former Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Chandrasekhar has also served as Minister of State for Jal Shakti from 2023 to 2024. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Thiruvananthapuram but lost to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor by 16,077 votes.
