New Delhi: India has developed its first homegrown Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine, which will be installed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi by October for initial trials. This marks a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare sector.
The indigenous MRI technology is expected to cut treatment costs significantly, with sources estimating that it will reduce MRI expenses for patients by approximately 50%. This move also aims to decrease India’s dependence on imported medical devices, as currently, around 80-85% of such equipment is imported.
In addition to lowering healthcare costs, the launch of the indigenous MRI machine is seen as a step toward increasing India’s self-reliance in medical technology. It is also poised to improve public access to MRI services across the country.
Speaking to the press, AIIMS Delhi Director Dr. M Srinivas emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that it would allow companies and institutions to adapt and ensure that India possesses cutting-edge medical equipment.
