Myanmar: The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar has reached 694 as of this morning, with authorities (a US agency) warning that the final count could exceed 10,000. The deadly tremors, which included a powerful 7.7 magnitude quake on the Richter scale, struck Myanmar yesterday, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
According to a Myanmar military official, at least 694 people have been confirmed dead following six major tremors. Search and rescue operations are currently underway in Myanmar and neighboring Thailand, with officials anticipating that the number of casualties will rise as efforts continue.
In response to the quake’s impact, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared Bangkok an “emergency zone.” The epicenter of the powerful earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), was located in the Sagaing region of Myanmar. The tremors were felt across several areas in Myanmar, including Mandalay, Kyaukse, Pyin Oo Lwin, and Shwebo.
The earthquake also triggered strong tremors in neighboring China, with reports of significant shaking. The quake struck at a depth of 10 km, further amplifying its destructive force across the region.
As search and rescue operations continue, the scale of the disaster is still unfolding, with many regions still unreachable due to damaged infrastructure and ongoing aftershocks.
