New Delhi: In a landmark report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) on 7 April 2025, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the top recipient of political donations in the financial year 2023–24, surpassing all other national parties by a wide margin.
ADR report reveals that the BJP received a staggering Rs 2,243.94 crore in political donations during this period, accounting for 88 percent of the total donations collected by all national parties.
The report analyzed donations above Rs 20,000 disclosed by national parties to the Election Commission of India (ECI), as mandated under the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The data, based on submissions made to the Election Commission detailing donations of over Rs 20,000, shows that the total contributions to national parties for the year amounted to Rs 2,544.28 crore, a sharp 199 percent increase compared to the previous year. These donations were made by 12,547 donors.

Congress and Other Parties’ Fundraising Figures
The Congress Party ranks second, receiving Rs 281.48 crore from 1,994 donors, a significant increase from the Rs 79.92 crore it received in the previous financial year. This marks a growth of 252.18 percent for Congress. Other parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Communist Party of India (Marxist), and National People’s Party (NPP), reported relatively smaller amounts in donations.
Remarkable Growth in BJP and Congress Donations
The BJP’s fundraising has seen an enormous jump, with donations rising from Rs 719.85 crore in 2022-23 to Rs 2,243.94 crore in 2023-24 — an increase of 211.72 percent. Meanwhile, Congress also experienced significant growth, with its donations climbing from Rs 79.92 crore to Rs 281.48 crore, a rise of 252.18 percent.
BSP’s Continued Lack of Major Donations
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which has consistently reported no donations over Rs 20,000 for the past 18 years, again declared zero large donations this year.
This report underscores the growing financial clout of major political parties like BJP and Congress, reflecting significant changes in political funding trends in India.
