New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that the Southwest Monsoon rainfall for the upcoming June-September season is likely to be above normal across most parts of India. This announcement was made during a press briefing held in the capital today.
Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of IMD, said that while a majority of regions will benefit from increased rainfall, some areas in the North-East, North-West, and South Peninsular India are expected to receive below normal precipitation. He also noted that El Niño conditions are expected to remain neutral during the monsoon months, contributing to favorable rainfall patterns.
Additionally, Dr. Mohapatra pointed out that northern hemisphere and Eurasian snow covers from January to March 2025 were below average, which also plays a role in influencing the monsoon dynamics.
Highlighting another critical aspect of the upcoming weather scenario, Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, warned that heat wave events in May and June are expected to occur twice as frequently compared to last year. This raises concerns about public health and agricultural impacts, especially in vulnerable regions.
The forecast comes at a crucial time for the agricultural sector and water resource planning, offering hope for improved crop yields and reservoir replenishment, while also urging preparedness for intense heat conditions ahead.
