New Delhi: In a boost to its maritime defence, the Indian Navy successfully test-fired a Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) from its newest guided missile destroyer, INS Surat on Thursday.
The missile intercepted a fast, low-flying target in a live test, showcasing the Navy’s combat readiness and technological strength.
The successful strike was part of a cooperative engagement scenario and demonstrated the destroyer’s capability to counter sea-skimming threats—difficult-to-detect targets that fly just above the water’s surface.
“This successful engagement highlights the #IndianNavy’s growing operational capabilities,” the Navy posted on X, formerly Twitter, sharing a video of the trial.

The MRSAM system, developed jointly by India and Israel, can neutralize aerial threats up to 70 kilometers away. Thursday’s trial confirmed the system’s accuracy and the Navy’s increasing reliance on home-grown warship technology and combat systems.

In an official statement, the Navy said the test reflects India’s push for a self-reliant defence sector and strengthens its commitment to safeguarding national maritime interests.
The test is part of a larger effort to modernize the Indian Navy amid evolving security dynamics in the region.
