RNS: In a dramatic development, Congress party leader Ajay Maken announced on Friday that all bank accounts belonging to the Congress, including those of the Youth Congress, have been frozen just before the Lok Sabha elections.
This move has sparked outrage within the party, with Maken calling it a serious assault on India’s democracy.
Addressing the media in Delhi, Maken revealed, “We received information yesterday that the cheques issued by the party were not being honored by banks. Upon investigation, we discovered that the accounts of the country’s primary opposition party have indeed been frozen.”
He further claimed that the Income Tax Department has demanded a recovery of Rs 210 crore from both the Congress party and the Youth Congress.
This development has severely hampered the party’s financial operations, including its ability to access funds raised through crowdfunding. Maken likened this situation to “freezing democracy” just days before the crucial Lok Sabha elections.
Maken also criticized the Modi government, suggesting that instead of Congress, it is the BJP’s accounts that should be frozen. He referenced Supreme Court rulings declaring certain corporate bonds in BJP’s possession as unconstitutional.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge joined Maken in condemning the government’s actions. He accused the Modi government of targeting the opposition while allowing unconstitutional funds to flow freely to the BJP.
Kharge vowed to take to the streets in protest against what he deemed as despotic actions by the government.
The freezing of Congress’s bank accounts has raised concerns about the fairness of the upcoming elections and has intensified the political atmosphere in the country. The Congress party has vowed to fight against these measures and ensure that democracy is upheld.
