Dhanbad: Around 1100 newly admitted UG (B. Tech/Integrated M. Tech) students at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad commenced their academic journey today with an orientation programme held at the Penman Auditorium.
The event offered a comprehensive introduction to the institute’s glorious history, rich legacy, and magnificent infrastructure, including state-of-the-art laboratories, a well-stocked library, sports facilities, and future development plans.
The orientation was conducted in two sessions. The first session at 9:30 a.m. was for students of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Mining Machinery Engineering.
The second session at 11:30 a.m. catered to students of Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Engineering Physics, Electronics & Communication, Mineral & Metallurgical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Applied Geophysics, and Applied Geology. During the sessions, various Deans presented on their respective domains.
Professor Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM), unable to attend in person due to exigencies, shared a recorded message encouraging students to learn from their activities and experiences.
He emphasized the importance of working hard and making full use of campus facilities to develop into independent professionals who can contribute to the nation’s progress. “Our country is now in the developing stage, but your endeavor will help it reach a developed stage,” he said, invoking the slogan “Viksit Bharat.”
Professor Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director, highlighted the institute’s prestigious status as the third oldest engineering institute in the country. He advised students to emulate the tortoise in the fable of the hare and the tortoise, emphasizing the value of consistent hard work over rapid but unsustainable efforts.
Professor Rajni Singh, Dean of Corporate Communications, briefed the new students on the institute’s 98-year legacy, encouraging them to tread their academic journey with determination. Professor MK Singh, Dean of Academics, outlined academic rules and attendance requirements, while Professor SK Gupta, Dean of Student Welfare, informed students about hostel regulations and sports facilities.
Professor Amit Dixit, Dean of Infrastructure, discussed existing and future infrastructure plans, and Prof. Ajay Mandal, Professor-in-Charge of the Library, detailed the library facilities.
On Tuesday, July 30, Samiran Dutta, CMD of BCCL, will address the students in a motivation session.
