Thiruvananthapuram: The death toll from the devastating landslides in Wayanad has risen to 165, with hundreds more feared trapped, according to recent reports. Rescue operations are ongoing, with multiple agencies mobilized to assist in the recovery efforts.
The landslides, which struck the district in quick succession, have severely impacted areas including Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. In response to the disaster, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Army have deployed teams to the affected regions.
On July 30, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) district HQ (Kerala & Mahe) and the ICG station Beypore sent disaster relief teams to support the ongoing efforts. According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, the ICG teams, composed of highly trained personnel and medical staff, are providing immediate relief to affected communities.
The ICG has supplied essential disaster relief materials, including rubber inflatable boats for rescue missions, diesel-driven pumps for water management, life jackets, raincoats, gumboots, and various earth-clearing tools. Additionally, they have delivered food, drinking water, and other vital supplies to support those impacted by the landslides.
The ICG is coordinating closely with local authorities to alleviate the effects of this tragic event, the statement added.
