IIT-ISM Dhanbad Hosts Grand Welcome Event for New International Students

Dhanbad: The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) (IIT-ISM) Dhanbad, extended a warm welcome to its newly admitted international students during a special meet held at the International Hostel on Monday evening. The event was organized by the Office of the Dean, International Relations and Alumni Affairs (IRAA), in collaboration with the Student Alumni and International Relations Cell (SAIRC).

This year, IIT (ISM) has enrolled 11 international students from countries including Cambodia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and more. These students are pursuing various postgraduate courses such as M.Tech, M.Sc. Tech, MBA, and PhD. The enrollment figure is anticipated to rise to 19, with three additional students under the ICCR initiative expected soon and five more joining in the winter session through self-sponsored programs.

Professor Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT (ISM), served as the Chief Guest for the event. In his address, he informed the new students about the institute’s clubs, cultural, and sporting activities, highlighting the diverse opportunities available beyond academic pursuits.

Professor Kumar emphasised that the international students would become ambassadors for IIT-ISM in their future professional fields.

Professor RM Bhattarjee, Dean of International Relations and Alumni Affairs, spoke about the importance of cultural exchange in modern education. He encouraged the new students to engage and connect with their Indian peers, fostering deeper cultural bonds and mutual understanding. Professor Bhattarjee outlined how IIT (ISM) creates a nurturing environment where students from across the globe come together to learn, innovate, and grow.

During the ceremony, each student was presented with a commemorative memento. The event also featured presentations by the students, who shared insights into their countries and cultures, and performed cultural programs.

The welcome meet was attended by several prominent faculty members, including Professor Rajni Singh, Dean of Corporate Communications; Professor SK Gupta, Dean of Students Welfare; Professor Sagar Pal, Dean of Research & Development; Professor Subhashis Chatterjee, Dean (Faculty); Professor Amit Rai Dixit, Dean (Infrastructure); Professor Tanmoy Maity, Associate Dean of International Relations and Alumni Affairs; and Professor Gauri Shankar, Associate Dean of International Relations, who all addressed the students and welcomed them to the IIT-ISM community.
