India defeats China 1-0 to Win 5th hockey Asian Champions Trophy

RNS: The Indian hockey team has emerged victorious in the Asian Champions Trophy, securing the title with a 1-0 win over China. The match remained scoreless for the majority of the game until Jugraj Singh scored a crucial goal just minutes before the final whistle, clinching the victory for India.

This triumph marks India’s fifth Asian Champions Trophy title, adding to their previous wins in 2011, 2016, 2018 (shared with Pakistan), and 2023. The victory also signifies a historic achievement for China, which was competing in its first-ever final and suffered its first loss in the tournament.

Throughout the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy, the Indian team displayed exceptional form, remaining unbeaten until the final. In the semi-finals, India decisively defeated South Korea 4-1, with goals from Harmanpreet Singh, Uttam Singh, and Jarmanpreet Singh.

Despite multiple opportunities, including a penalty corner, India struggled to score in the earlier quarters of the final. China’s defense was resilient, preventing Indian players from finding the net in the first and second quarters. In the third quarter, China mounted several attacks, but Indian goalkeeper Krishna Pathak stood firm.

The decisive moment came when Jugraj Singh scored a brilliant field goal, giving India a 1-0 lead and sealing their fifth Asian Champions Trophy title. The Indian team maintained their defensive strength, ensuring China did not get another chance to score.
