Dhanbad: In a collaborative effort, faculty members and research scholars from IIT-ISM Dhanbad, along with experts from Birsa Agriculture University, Ranchi, provided training in scientific farming to farmers in Kundhit and Nala villages of Jamtara district, Jharkhand. This initiative is part of a project aimed at enhancing the economic well-being of Scheduled Tribe communities through advanced agricultural practices.
Led by Prof. Rashmi Singh, the team from the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering focused on crucial topics such as soil quality and texture, soil health cards, and the identification and management of plant diseases. The training session, which took place at Kundhit block, attracted a diverse audience that included farmers, Krishak Mitra, NGO members, and local leaders.
During the first day of training, experts like Professor B.K. Aggarwal and Professor M.K. Barnwal discussed effective fertilizer use, improving seed quality, and optimizing cropping systems to enhance income. “This training provided farmers with practical strategies to optimize productivity and support sustainable growth in their communities,” said Prof. Singh, emphasizing the goal of equipping farmers with the tools necessary for better soil management and crop health.
The project team, which includes research scholars Sumita, Deep Chowdhury, Pawan Kumar, Nilesh Kumar, Sunny Kumar, Anand Chandra Sahu, and Dipen, also conducted a control group survey on October 6 and 7. A follow-up treatment group survey will be conducted post-training to evaluate the training’s impact.
This initiative follows a series of workshops conducted by IIT (ISM) in several villages across Jamtara to promote farm-based entrepreneurship among local farmers.
