One killed in attack on Bangladesh Air Force base; Army Takes Control

RNS: One person was killed and several others injured during an attack on an Air Force base in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, on Monday. Local media reported that the violence occurred amid tensions surrounding an airport expansion project that necessitates the relocation of residents, a move opposed by the local community.

According to the country’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a group of miscreants targeted the air force base in Samiti Par. ISPR’s assistant director, Ayesha Siddiqua, confirmed that the Bangladesh Air Force was taking necessary actions in response.

The deceased, identified as 25-year-old Shihab Kabir Nahid from Samitipara, was reportedly brought dead to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital with severe head injuries. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin confirmed the death, stating that an investigation would take place to uncover the cause of the clash and that both parties involved would be consulted.

This incident follows comments by Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Adviser, retired Lieutenant General M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, who on Monday morning vowed to crack down on destabilizing elements in the country, vowing to prevent crime at all costs.
