RNS: Anwar Ibrahim was sworn in as Malaysia’s new Prime Minister on Thursday. King Al-Sultan Abdullah appointed the new leader after elections over the weekend produced a historic deadlocked parliament. Neither Anwar nor former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had obtained the simple majority required to establish a government.
Following conversations with a number of lawmakers, the constitutional monarch, King Abdullah, gave his approval for the 75-year-old leader Anwar Ibrahim to be appointed as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Anwar Ibrahim will take office on April 1. In the 1990s, Anwar served as the country’s Deputy Prime Minister, and he is currently the official Prime Ministerial Candidate.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Ibrahim on his election as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia. Modi in a tweet said he looks forward to working closely together to further strengthen India-Malaysia Enhanced Strategic Partnership.
Ibrahim took the oath of office in a simple ceremony at the national palace yesterday.
