Nawaz Sharif Admits Pakistani Army’s Role in Sparking 1999 Kargil War

RNS: In a surprising disclosure, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, has acknowledged that the Pakistani military’s infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir was the catalyst for the 1999 Kargil War.

Sharif made this admission during a Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) general council meeting held yesterday.

Sharif recounted that in February 1999, then Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Lahore and signed the Lahore Declaration, an agreement aimed at fostering peace and stability between India and Pakistan.

However, soon after the declaration, Pakistani troops infiltrated the Kargil district in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the outbreak of the Kargil War.

This revelation by Sharif came as he was re-elected unopposed as the President of the ruling PML-N party during the same council meeting.
