IIT-ISM Launches Intensive Course on Advanced Mine Surveying for CIL Surveyors

Dhanbad: A six-week intensive course on Advances in Mine Surveying Technology kicked off today at IIT (ISM), with 82 mine surveyors from various subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL) participating. The course was inaugurated by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM), at the Executive Development Center of the institute.

Participants included surveyors from Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), and North Eastern Coalfields Limited (NECL), along with a few from private mining companies.

Organized by the Department of Mining Engineering in collaboration with TEXMiN Foundation, a Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) at IIT (ISM), the course aims to familiarize mine surveyors with the latest advancements in Geodesy, Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Slope Stability, and Subsidence Monitoring.

During his address, Prof. Mishra highlighted the critical role of mine surveying in ensuring safety and effective resource management in mining operations through accurate measurement, mapping, and management of both underground and surface mines. He emphasized that advanced technologies such as Satellite Imagery, Drones, and Aerial LiDAR can significantly aid in detecting surface changes and preventing mishaps like inundations, roof falls, and equipment damages.

Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT (ISM) and course coordinator, informed the surveyors that the course would include lectures, tutorials, discussions, excursions, and extensive field visits to underground mines.

Prof. Devi Prasad Mishra, Head of the Department of Mining Engineering, encouraged participants to fully utilize the course to enhance their surveying skills. Associate Professor Vasanta Govind Kumar Villuri, co-coordinator of the course along with Prof. Mohammed Soyeb Alam, noted that such courses are regularly organized to train mine surveyors in the latest technologies, with many participants having over a decade of experience in their respective fields.

The course aims to equip surveyors with the necessary skills to implement advanced surveying techniques, ultimately improving safety and efficiency in mining operations.
