New Delhi: A portion of the roof at Terminal 1 (T1) of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed, resulting in the death of one person and injuring five others on Friday.
The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall in the area. Delhi has been experiencing heavy rainfall for the second consecutive day, leading to significant waterlogging across various parts of the national capital.
All departures from T1 have been temporarily suspended as a result of the collapse. Sixteen departure flights and twelve arrival flights have been canceled since midnight, officials informed India Today. Check-in counters at the terminal have also been suspended as a precautionary measure.
Providing an update on the situation, Delhi Airport posted on X: “All departing and arriving flights from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 are fully operational. Flights at Terminal 1 Arrivals are also operating. However, departing flights from Terminal 1 are canceled until 2 pm today.”
Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan stated that he is personally monitoring the situation. “Personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at T1 Delhi Airport. First responders are working on-site. I have also advised the airlines to assist all affected passengers at T1. The injured have been evacuated to the hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing,” the minister said.
The Union Civil Aviation Minister said that a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the deceased and Rs 3 lakh for the injured has been announced.
