Assam Floods: 58 Dead, over 24 Lakhs affected as rivers surge

Guwahati: Devastating floods in Assam have claimed the lives of 58 people and affected over 2.3 million residents, leaving hundreds homeless and causing widespread displacement, local media reported on Thursday.

Rising waters from the Brahmaputra River and nine other tributaries breached danger levels in several districts including Neamatighat, Tezpur, Dhubri, and Goalpara.

Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed ANI that while water levels are slowly receding in most areas, the damage has been extensive.

According to the reports, around 577 relief camps have been established across 29 districts, providing shelter and aid to more than 5.30 laksh people, with distribution centers set up for food and supplies.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) confirmed recent fatalities, including drownings in Charaideo and fatalities in Goalpara, Morigaon, Sonitpur, and Tinsukia districts.

Dhubri district is among the hardest hit, followed by Cachar and Darrang, according to ASDMA reports.

In total, 2.396 million people across 29 districts have been affected by this wave of flooding.

Chief Minister Sarma expressed condolences to the family of Abhinash Sarkar, a child who went missing after falling into a drain during the floods in Jyotinagar, Guwahati. He visited the family on Saturday, inspecting the accident site and urging intensified search efforts.

On Friday, Sarma visited Dibrugarh to assess the flood situation and explore community-based solutions for the inundated areas.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as efforts to provide relief and support to affected communities intensify.
