New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to collaborate on the development of advanced lightweight bulletproof jackets, designated as Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat.
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of DRDO, emphasized the importance of this initiative, describing the lightweight bulletproof jacket as a prime example of effective collaboration among defense research, academia, and industry.
According to the Defence Ministry, these innovative jackets are constructed from advanced polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic materials. The new designs are engineered to meet the highest threat level standards while weighing less than the maximum limits specified in the Indian Army’s General Staff Qualitative Requirement.
This partnership represents a significant advancement in enhancing the safety and operational performance of military personnel. The jackets, developed through meticulous characterization of materials at high strain rates, have undergone rigorous research and development trials and have successfully passed all required protocols.
The jackets are available in modular designs, featuring front and rear armor that provides comprehensive 360-degree protection. Weighing a minimum of 8.2 kg for certain configurations and up to 9.5 kg for different Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) levels, these bulletproof jackets aim to improve the mobility and comfort of soldiers in the field.
Additionally, the Centre plans to facilitate the transfer of technology to three shortlisted Indian industries, further promoting domestic capabilities in defense manufacturing. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in reinforcing the safety of military personnel while advancing indigenous defense technologies.
