New Delhi: The Delhi High Court, today adjourned the hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the cancellation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship. The matter, brought forward by BJP leader and former Union Minister Subramanian Swamy, will be heard again on November 6.
Swamy’s petition requests the Union Home Ministry to take action against Gandhi, alleging that he has declared himself a British citizen. Earlier, in a post on social media platform X, Swamy stated, “My Associate Advocate Satya Sabharwal has filed a PIL on the failure of the Home Ministry to prosecute Rahul Gandhi and showcases why he was not stripped of his Indian citizenship. Rahul Gandhi has refused to reply to HM, hence the PIL. I also thank Associates Vishesh Kanoria.”
This is not the first time Swamy has raised concerns about Gandhi’s citizenship status. In 2019, he wrote to the Union Home Ministry, asserting that Gandhi’s voluntary declaration of British nationality to the UK government violates Article 9 of the Indian Constitution and the Indian Citizenship Act of 1955.
Swamy’s petition also claims that Gandhi was a director and secretary of a UK-registered company, Backops Limited, which was established in 2003. According to the company’s annual returns filed in 2005 and 2006, Gandhi’s date of birth is listed as June 19, 1970, with his nationality declared as British.
