Nation Honors Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam on his Birth Anniversary

New Delhi: Today, India celebrates the birth anniversary of Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, the former President and renowned aerospace engineer, born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Fondly referred to as the “Missile Man of India,” Dr. Kalam made significant contributions to the nation’s space and missile programs.

Dr. Kalam was instrumental as Project Director in the development of India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle, which greatly advanced ISRO’s capabilities, particularly with the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). Following his two-decade tenure at ISRO, he focused on indigenous guided missile development, leading to the successful creation and operationalization of the AGNI and PRITHVI missile systems. His leadership was pivotal during the critical Pokhran-II nuclear tests, which established India as a nuclear weapons state.

An esteemed scientist, Dr. Kalam received honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions, along with numerous accolades including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. In 2002, he was elected as the 11th President of India, further cementing his legacy as a champion of science and education.

As the nation reflects on his remarkable contributions today, tributes from various sectors continue to highlight Dr. Kalam’s enduring impact on India’s scientific and technological advancement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also paid tribute to Dr. Kalam on this special day. In a social media post, Modi expressed that the former President’s thoughts and vision will guide the country toward achieving the goal of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).
