Dhanbad: A two-week refresher course on advanced concepts in Biophysics and Soft Matter commenced today at IIT-ISM, Dhanbad, bringing together over 50 expert faculty members from various technical and academic institutions across the country.
The inaugural session, held at the i2h building, featured prominent experts including Professor Yashwant Singh, former Professor and Head of the Department of Physics at Banaras Hindu University, and Professor Ambarish Kumar from IIT Bombay. They explored foundational principles and recent advancements in the field, covering topics such as the basic principles of soft matter and biophysics.
Professor Singh, a noted theoretical physicist, discussed the fundamental concepts of soft matter physics during two expert sessions. Professor Kumar focused on microscopic forces in biological systems and the influence of the surrounding medium on these systems’ functioning.
According to Professor Pankaj Mishra of the Department of Physics and coordinator of the program, the course, part of the Malviya Mission Teacher’s Training Programme, aims to enhance faculty members’ understanding of the latest research in soft matter physics. He emphasized that the knowledge gained will be beneficial for their classrooms and laboratories.
The course features in-depth lectures from leading experts from prestigious institutions such as IISc Bangalore and other IITs. Topics include molecular dynamics simulations of macromolecular crystals, protein folding, and DNA dynamics, all aimed at providing insights into biological mechanisms at the microscopic level.
“The goal of the course is to bridge classical concepts with contemporary research frontiers,” Professor Mishra explained, highlighting the program’s intent to foster collaboration and empower educators with the latest advancements in biophysics and soft matter.
Professor Mrinalini Pandey, Coordinator of the Faculty Development Centre, provided an overview of various training programs being conducted at the centre, including faculty induction and refresher programs.
Professor Bobby Antony, Head of the Department of Physics at IIT-ISM, expressed confidence that the course will significantly enhance participants’ knowledge and skills, contributing to their professional development.
